Vale Tony Stavrianos

Men of League Foundation member and former Eastern Suburbs Roosters player Tony Stavrianos passed on Saturday 24 June 2017 at Prince of Wales Hospital – Randwick. He had fought hard against the insidious pancreatic cancer.

The funeral service, held on Friday 30 June 2017, epitomised the popularity and respect for Tony with a huge congregation attending the service at St Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Kingsford.

As a boy Tony and his younger brother Tassie played for Kensington United in the South Sydney juniors, living a little more than a stone’s throw from Kenso Oval.

In 1959 Tony was selected in South Sydney Presidents Cup team. They were runners up to Balmain that season. Tony then played grade with Souths in 1960-61 before moving across to Eastern Suburbs for the 1962 – 64 seasons. He played 12 first grade games.

Former teammate at both clubs Fred Jackson recalled that Tony was a “bossy halfback” continually organising the forwards and completely in charge of the plays. Fred expressed these sentiments to Tony during a Men of League Foundation wellbeing visit and Tony smiled and reminisced about his days playing rugby league.

Tony is survived by his wife Sylvia, daughters Karen and Cherie and his son Jimmy, brother Tassie, sisters Irene and Diane.
