Vale – Peggy Bowen

Vale – Peggy Bowen

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of my wife’s mother, Peggy Floyd Bowen. Peggy passed away on Friday night, 23 October 2015 at the Regis Gannon Gardens Nursing Home in Hurstville. She was 90 years young.

Born and bred in Marrickville, Peggy was a lifelong Newtown Bluebags supporter. Living in Hurstville since 1949 gave her a definite allegiance to the St George Dragons. Peggy’s husband, Jack Bowen, passed in 1996. Jack was a Newtown junior halfback before a knee injury saw him turn to the refereeing ranks in the Newtown district.

Later at the suggestion of his best mate Col Pearce, Jack became a touch judge in the Sydney first grade premiership which was capped off with him being appointed as a touch judge in the 1952 Third Test played at the SCG between Australia and New Zealand.
New Zealand beat Australia 19-9 to secure the series 2-1 from the Clive Churchill captain coached Australians.

UPDATED –
Peggy Bowen funeral will be held on Tuesday 3 November 2015 at 10am at St Georges Church Hurstville (Corner Forest Road & The Avenue Hurstville). Service will then move to Woronora Cemetery – Crematorium – Sutherland.
