Vale Mervyn James Gillmer

Vale Mervyn James Gillmer

The last surviving Manly Warringah First Grade (1947-1949) player.

Mervyn, aged 92 years old, passed away during October 2016 and was the longest serving player of the first Manly Warringah First Grade team to compete in the NSW Rugby League Premierships in 1947-1949.

He was a team mate of many Manly Warringah players including Max Whitehead, Johnny Bliss, Mackie Campbell, Roy Bull, Gordon Willoughby and Ron O’Connell to name a few. He attended Brookvale Oval whenever he could to support the Sea Eagles and his old Club colours.

He was loved and respected by many people in the Manly Warringah District, who are finding it hard as it hit home that one of their best has passed away.

Mervyn will be dearly missed by his loving wife Joyce of 68 years marriage, children Gaye (dec.), Caroline, son in-law Tony plus and his many nephews/nieces.

Over the years, he never changed his code/etiquette of being “The Gentle Man”.

A Private Cremation Service was held.

We will never forget Mervyn.
