Vale – Merv Wright

Vale – Merv Wright

 1942 -2015

In the NSW town of Maitland, the passing of the popular former fine rugby league player Merv Wright has saddened the hearts of those fortunate to have known him and many more whom knew of him. His exploits as a player are legendary in the Newcastle area, his record unsurpassed, however it is Merv the humble, gentle, family man that completes the character and makes him highly respected and admired.

Originally from Kempsey NSW, Merv and his centre partner Eric Robinson were a formidable combination playing for the strong Alexandria Rovers Club in the South Sydney Junior League.  Merv played in 1961 -2 Premiership winning Souths Presidents Cup teams and also was a star player for the South Sydney Third grade premiers in 1962.

After representing Western Division Merv came to Newcastle where he soon became the crowd favourite at Maitland Pickers with toughness, speed and strong defence. A few months ago he was selected in the top twenty players of all time for that club. He received a standing ovation at the presentation of the #5 jersey.

Merv Wright undoubtedly was a top player and as a person he commanded respect and possessed impeccable character and was a dedicated family man.

Terry Pannowitz – Captain Coach of Maitland when Merv was with the club, commented as follows:

“Just a fantastic ambassador for rugby league, the aboriginal community and for the city of Maitland. Merv Wright is someone you cannot replace.”

He is survived his partner of 43 years Sue and their seven children.
