Vale – John Hooper

John Hooper died on March 1 2018 after a battle with cancer.

John was also had a few other misfortunes:
At one stage while using a walking frame, and being pig-headed about other people’s parking skills, he stumbled while accessing his car and fractured his leg. One of those sad but funny occurrences, John in his usual stoic way would use his oft-quoted phrase “it is what it is”.

John was a country boy from Boggabri, a small town in North-West New South Wales.

He came to Sydney after school to work and after completing an apprenticeship joined the NSW police force.

John played league for Bondi United, graduating to Eastern Suburbs, where he played at reserve grade level and remained a lifelong Roosters supporter.

After leaving the police force, and marrying his wife Joan, he became successful in business.

Joan and her family were lifelong Western Suburbs Magpies supporters and John’s loyalties became divided.

He had many stories to tell of some of the many characters playing for Wests in the 1960’s and 70’s, which he loved regaling.

He was once outbid, much to Joan’s delight, by Les Boyd, in a battle of wills, for a model ship in a bottle that served no apparent purpose.

He and Joan retired to the Sunshine Coast in 2004, however, he became bored and created a couriers job for himself, which of course became a roaring success!

Time caught up with him in 2008, when he had the first of his knee replacements and finally retired.

John was a great character and despite his illness, was always upbeat and loved a chat. No topic was out of his range.

His coffin was draped with the Roosters flag and other memorabilia from his football days, representing a life well lived.

John’s funeral will be held on Wednesday 9 May.
