A trip to the big smoke for Bill Widders

Bill and his devoted wife, Nonie, travelled to Sydney from Armidale this week in order for Bill to receive treatment at St Vincent’s Hospital. He is bravely battling cancer with the support of his family.

A clever and creative half-back in his day, Bill was a member of the first Indigenous team to tour New Zealand in 1973. He also represented South Sydney in the Presidents Cup and played in the Redfern All Blacks Premiership team in 1974.

Bill and his brother Ron starred for Narwan Eels in several competition winning teams. It was plainly obvious how much joy rugby league has provided the family.

A highlight was the opportunity for Nonie and Bill to visit Nana Glenn at the invitation of Russell Crowe. Warren Thompson from the Men of League Foundation’s Sydney Metro Committee presented Bill with a polo shirt and cap.

The Foundation is honoured to be able to support the Widders family in such a difficult time.
