Pops Kelly visited by MOL

Brian Kelly – aka "Pops" – was a former player with the Balmain Junior Rugby League Club Leichhardt Wanderers before being selected in the Balmain Presidents Cup and then played 3rd grade with both Balmain and Newtown Clubs in the early 1960s.

Unfortunately, Brian has not been well and was in Mona Vale Hospital before now recuperating in Collaroy Plateau View Nursing Home.

Fred Jackson, Denis Bendall and Michael Hyde from the Northern Sydney Men of League Committee visited Brian on 23 October 2013.

His son Sean was also in attendance when we visited and we spoke about his playing times and earlier days when he went to De La Salle Ashfield and played in the Metropolitan Catholic Colleges' Competition.

Brian was a keen swimmer and a member of the North Narrabeen Surf Club, where he swam with the Narrabeen Shivering Sharks and recalls swimming against "Bumper" Farrell from Newtown ,who was also a member.

We presented Brian with a Men of League polo shirt and some magazines and thanked him for his contribution to the game and wished him a continued recovery.

Brian and his family thanked the Men of League for the visit.
