Gordon (Nipper) Goldsmith

On Friday 15th August, 2014 Gordon (Nipper) Goldsmith, was visited at Clermont Nursing Home, Ryde by Alan Webb and Brian Finegan, Welfare Officers from Sydney Metro Branch.

Nipper started his career with the Balmain Tigers in the 1950’s.  He was a member of the 1954-55-56, 3rd Grade Premiership team.  When asked in what position he played he simply replied anywhere in the forwards. He played a few first grade games in 1960-61 alongside players such as Harry Raven, Bob Boland, Bobby Mara, Keith Barnes, Laurie Fagan and his good mate Bob Tracey.

The early 60’s saw Nipper move to Mittagong where he represented Southern Division against the touring British Lions.  He was Captain/Coach of three consecutive Group 6 Premierships for Mittagong.

After returning to Sydney in early 1965 he coached the Tigers lower grade teams.  Coaching such players as Gary Leo, Greg Fryer, Des Bonner, John “Spooky” Spencer and Arthur Beetson on his return from England.  He last coached in 1973.

On finishing as a coach, Gordon remained close to the Tigers and had many social events with Leo Nosworthy, Billy Horne, Joe Keighran, Kevin Humphreys, Dr. Arnold Clifford and Billy Tulloch.

He was presented with a Men of League Cap and Polo Shirt.

Nipper thanked us for taking time to visit him.
