Men of League Weekend a great success

The Men of League Foundation has hailed its recent Pull Your Socks Up campaign as a great success, with the initiative raising more than $16,000.

The inaugural Men of League Weekend, held over 6-7 July, saw rugby league players, officials and teams across the country buying commemorative Men of League socks to wear during their games, with all funds going toward supporting members of the rugby league community who have suffered spinal cord injuries.

A number of NRL clubs also got behind the campaign, with the Cronulla Sharks, North Queensland Cowboys and Gold Coast Titans all wearing Men of League socks in their round 17 games.

The Men of League can confirm that a total of 3123 pairs of socks were sold to teams, clubs and referees associations, raising more than $12,000.

A number of individual clubs also undertook their own fundraising initiative – such as Concord-Burwood United and Holy Cross Rhinos, who raised $1500 and $1000 respectively – resulting in an additional $4000 raised for the campaign.

To encourage participation, Men of League also held an online competition for clubs to win a private coaching clinic with Kangaroos head coach Tim Sheens.

The prize was won by western Sydney team Glenmore Park Brumbies Under 8-1s, who organised a special trip to the Sydney Cricket Ground, where they took a brilliant photo of their young players wearing their kit and Men of League socks in the change rooms, as well as making a special video of the whole day.

Chairman of the Men of League Foundation, Ron Coote AM, said, “The inaugural Men of League Weekend was a fantastic success and we are extremely grateful to all those who bought a pair of socks or held their own fundraising event.

“The response we received from all corners of the country illustrates how the Foundation is built upon the strength and spirit of the people who love the game, and I thank all those who took part for their support. Those funds will go a long way to improving the lives of those in the rugby league community who are doing it hard.”
