William (Bill) Snowden

WILLIAM (BILL) SNOWDEN – Illawong – 19-5-15

On Tuesday 19 May 2015, Southern Sydney Branch Secretary Grahame Bowen, along with John Peard and Alan Webb visited Bill at Sir Thomas Mitchell Nursing Home, Illawong.

Bill is turning 80 this year and is suffering from Dementia.

He played for the Ponsonby club in Auckland New Zealand and represented New Zealand in 19 tests between 1961-1965 – six against Australia, six against France and seven against Great Britain.

He Captained his country in 1965 against Australia and the Great Britain & France tour the same year.  He also toured Australia in 1963.

A half-back, Bill moved to Sydney to play with the Eastern Suburbs club but was unable to obtain a clearance to play, so he then played in the juniors under a false name – he remained involved with Easts and was chairman of Selectors with that club in 1974 & 1975.

Bill was presented with a Men of League Polo shirt.

Sadly Bill’s wife passed away a few years ago, and he would welcome a visit from any former associates.
