Visit a lift for ‘Golden Greek’ Fonda

Fonda Metassa was rapt to receive a visit from the Gold Coast Men of League committee members Greg Sylvester, John Lang, Tommy Bishop and Graeme Farrar.

Fonda was a winger, known as ‘The Golden Greek’, who played for Fortitude Valley, South Sydney (1960-61) and the North Brisbane Devils.

He also represented Queensland and Brisbane against the Great Britain touring team in 1966. In 2008, Fonda was named on the wing in the North Devils all-time greatest team.

Upon his retirement as a player Fonda became the voice of rugby league in Brisbane commentating on the greatest game of all on television and on radio with 4BH.

Fonda became part of Brisbane of Brisbane folklore when he famously burst from the back of an ambulance to return to the field at Lang Park, after being carted off injured in a match for Norths against Redcliffe.

Although incapacitated by the loss of all his toes, Fonda still has a sense of humour and, when asked how many grand finals he played in, he replied, “Seven, won six”.

Fonda and his family will soon be relocating back to Brisbane and would love to hear from any of his lost mates and former team members

We would also like to say thank you to Fonda’s wife and sister for their hospitality and coffee, which was very much appreciated.
