Vale – Peter Gallagher
15 April 1941 – 19 September 2015
Peter passed away after a long period of illness. He was born in Taree and was a product of the prestigious St. Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, Sydney. Here he played rugby union in the 1st XV team and commenced his rugby league playing career with the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club in 1960 until 1965. During that time he played mainly as a centre for a total of 85 first grade games, as the 509th club’s first grade player and he was captain of the club in 1965. During this time his younger brother Terry was also there in first grade with him from 1962 to 1967, playing in 17 first grade games, as the 522nd club’s first grade player.
In 1966 Peter transferred to the Manly Warringah District Rugby League Football Club where he played until 1968 and became the club’s 176th first grade player with a total of 32 first grade games. Peter was noted for his speed and agility on the field and this assisted him greatly in his participation as a noted professional sprinter, competing successfully against noted sprinters the likes of Reg Hatton, David Irvine, Archie Brown, Warren Thompson and Jeff Simmons.
He subsequently became a well-respected teacher at Cromer High School for many years.
Peter will be dearly missed by his loving wife Sue, stepchildren Lisa and Mark and his devoted brother Terry plus the countless members of the community that had the pleasure of his company.
A Requiem Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Peter will be held at St. Joseph’s Church Narrabeen on Friday 25 September 2015 at 10.30 am.
