Vale Peter Bernard “Woody” Woodcroft

6.9.1937 – 30.6.2016

The South Sydney Rabbitohs Rugby League Club sadly lost one of their long term most loyal and dedicated supporters when Peter passed away sudden on the 30 June 2016 at his home in the South Sydney district.

Peter was born in Randwick NSW and never really moved out of the South Sydney all his life. In his younger days he played rugby league in the competitive South Sydney Junior Rugby League competitions in the 1950’s with the strong Coogee Rugby League Football Club, in all their teams up to “A” Grade, as a strong uncompromising front row forward. In those days there was nothing Peter would rather do than to put on his green & white Coogee jersey and play for the Club.

Away from rugby league he was a prominent Official of the NSW Athletic League for many years and officiated in sprint races including the likes of 1st grade speedster rugby league players the late Ken Irvine, Jeff Simmonds, Warren Thompson, Dave Woods, the late Reg Hatton, Michael Cleary, Brian James, Nick Yakich, Dave Irvine and Arch Brown.

Peter was a keen supporter of the Men of League Foundation and never missed a function organised by the Metro Committee at The Juniors Club; he was also a respected Member of the Chelsea Rugby League Old Mates Group and we were fortunate to have his company on our annual bus trip up to the Ettalong Bowling Club on the 25 June 2016.

He was the type of person you liked to be in his company over a beer as he always had many funny stories to tell.

Peter was a beloved Father, Grandfather and friend of countless persons, all of whom will all miss him dearly.

We will never forget this fine man we called “Woody”.

A funeral service will be held at the South Chapel, Eastern Suburbs Crematorium on Friday 8 July 2016 at 11.00 am.
