Vale – John Sydney Ross

Men of League Foundation Member #174
Born 20 October 1931 Passed Away 28 June 2018

Sadly on 28 June 2018, a wonderful 86-year old gentleman by the name of John Sydney Ross OAM passed away. His loss will be felt by countless persons in Australia forever more.

In his lifetime, he achieved many major achievements including as a 20-year old promising rugby league player he was graded by the Parramatta District Rugby League Football Club and during 1951-1955 he played over 100 grade games. This included 33 games in first grade as a classy five-eight (issued with Club’s 1st Grade Badge Number 52) and then was involved in coaching teams in the strong Wollongong rugby league district.

Away from the rugby league field, John had a highly distinguished and successful career in the New South Wales hotel industry from 1961-1997, where he was a licensee of many fine hotels in and around Sydney. In addition to that, he served on the AHA NSW Executive during 1968-1993 and was President of the AHA NSW Branch for 11 years, plus he also served as both Vice-President and President of the National AHA.

Prior to retiring in 1997, he was the Founding Chairman of HOSTPLUS, the industry superannuation fund for a range of different industries. In 2009, John was also admitted to the NSW AHA’s Hall of Fame and he was also honoured with an Order Of Australia Medal.

John will be dearly missed by his loving family, friends, colleagues and his many fellow Men of League Foundation members, who he had known since the early 2000’s, as member number 174.

John’s family extend an invitation to friends and colleagues to attend a Memorial Service in his honour at the RMYC, Prince Alfred Parade Newport on Friday 20 July, 2018 at 12:00 PM.
