Vale – Geoff Weekes

Sadly Geoff passed away peacefully on the 25 June 2015 at the Greenwich Hospital, Sydney.

He was born in Rockdale and at an early age commenced playing rugby league and his remarkable skills as a talented centre with speed and strength were quickly recognised by the famous St. George District Rugby League Club and he was graded at the Club in 1954.

During 1954-1961 he went onto play 66 1st grade games, scoring 31 tries and played in 2 Grand Final winning teams in 1958 and 1959. In the 1958 it was the Club’s 3rd successive Grand Final winning team, beating Western Suburbs 20-9 and he played with such greats as Billy Wilson, Ken Kearney, Norm Provan, Brian Clay, Eddie Lumsden, Tommy Ryan and Merv Lees.

In 1959 he was a member of the season’s undefeated St. George team beating Manly Warringah 20-0 in the Grand Final in which Geoff scored a try. The team again contained many fine players including a 19 year old youngster named Johnny Raper. 1962 saw Geoff transfer to the great Parramatta District Rugby League Club where he was the Club’s 209th 1st grade player until 1963, playing in 25 1st grade games, scoring 7 tries.

Geoff will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 45 years Joanne, his son and daughter plus 6 grandchildren plus the many thousands of rugby league supporters who had the pleasure to watch him play.
