Vale Don Tweddle

2 June 1948 – 14 June 2012

The Corrimal Rugby League club lost a popular and valued member when Don Tweddle senior passed away on Thursday 14 June. The Tweddle family have given plenty of service on and off the field, to the Cougars for more than 40 years. Don senior joined the club as an under 18 lock forward in 1966 and the next year made his first grade debut. He played in the Illawarra first grade semi finals in 1969, 1970 and 1971 under captain/coach, George Evans, who played in four winning first grade Grand Finals with St. George.

Don senior played over 100 grade games with Corrimal more than half in first grade. Later in his career, he was a member of two Reserve Grade Grand Final winning teams, in 1971 and 1973.

Don’s three sons, Alan, Don junior and Peter were also excellent players with all three playing a lot of first grade matches in the Illawarra competition, as well as representing Illawarra.

The eldest son, Alan, played Presidents Cup with the Steelers , while Don junior had a season with the Cronulla Sharks in 2003, playing a half a dozen or so top grade games. Both Alan and Don junior were tough and powerful front rowers, while Peter was equally at home in the forwards and the backs. All three captained the Corrimal first grade team at some stage of their careers. Don senior was an extremely proud father at Ziems Park on 6 April 2002, when all three brothers played in the Corrimal firsts team, who defeated Wollongong 32-18.

Don senior’s passing marked a very tragic week for the family, as his father and the boy’s grandfather, Alan, passed away just the day before.

The Men of League send our deepest sympathies to Don’s wife Christine, his three sons along with the rest of his family and his many friends
