Following a call from Trevor’s son–in–law Jason, a visit was arranged to see Trevor Heiler, former South Sydney hard running and fierce attacking centre from the early 60s.
Men of League Wellbeing Officers Fred Jackson (Northern Sydney) and Warren Thompson (Sydney Metro), along with former teammates of Trevor’s from Alexandria Rovers and Souths Paul Wheelhouse were privileged to meet many of the Heilers’ large family. It was a very special occasion being Trevor and his devoted wife Pat’s 51st wedding anniversary.
The family, including three children and seven grandchildren, celebrated in the back garden on a perfect sunny winter’s day at Trevor and Pats’ home in Sydney.
Typical of the man; Trevor, despite his ill health, enjoyed reminiscing about the great days and talking about old mates. With all four men having been at Souths in the 1960s, there was certainly no shortage of conversation with Trevor contributing much of it with his excellent long term memories.
Trevor also played with the premiership winning second division Kingsford team in 1963. The team was coached by the amazingly successful coach Clem Kennedy, winner of six consecutive
President Cup premierships.
The family was very appreciative of the visit, however Fred, Warren and Paul agreed they were indeed fortunate to be part of the day and to spend valuable time with an old mate in Trevor Heiler.
