Statement by Ron Coote – resignation of Corene Strauss

Mr Ron Coote AM, Chairman of the Men of League Foundation, and Ms Corene Strauss, Chief Executive Officer, have today announced that Ms Strauss will finalise her employment with the Foundation effective 9 January 2016.

“It is time to move on,” said Ms Strauss. “Organisations that are entering a new growth phase need reinvigoration. The Foundation for the past two years has offered me a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the welfare sector in a very special way, in a very special organisation and I will miss it.

“Our Chairman, Ron Coote, is a visionary. I have felt privileged to have worked with him as well as our outstanding Board, my first class team who inspire me every day and the network of Committees who really are the heart and soul of this Foundation.

“I am proud that, during my time as CEO, the organisation’s revenues have grown and we have increased our membership to 28,450 members. Most satisfyingly, we have processed over 172 grant applications for individuals and families of the Rugby League community.

“Recently our end of financial year ‘2015 Tax campaign’ was the NSW finalist in the National Fundraising Institute Awards for under $5M Not for Profit organisations with the winner to be announced in the New Year. It has been so gratifying to be part of all this.”

Mr Coote, in reflecting on the gains made in the years since Ms Strauss’s appointment, said structure had been created to underpin the marvellous work done by the Foundation’s tireless committees and there had been a growing professionalism in relation to welfare delivery.

“In her time with us, Corene has focused on the creation of proper processes, observed sounder corporate governance standards and brought her immense energy and enthusiasm to the job of supporting the men, women and children of the Rugby League community who have fallen on hard times. The Board and I wish her well as she moves ahead.

“It is also an exciting opportunity for Corene’s successor, who will benefit from the achievements to date and work with the Board, offering his or her talents to this dynamic Foundation – the charity of Rugby League,” Mr Coote said.

Ray Beattie has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer. Ray will ensure a smooth transition having served as Men of League’s Honorary Wellbeing Advisor and Welfare Committee member and also as Scholarship Officer. These roles have given him a comprehensive understanding of the Foundation operations and its staff. The search for Ms Strauss’s successor will begin immediately.
