Men of League Foundation Appoints New Chairperson

MEN OF LEAGUE FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN ‘HANGS UP HIS BOOTS’ – NEW CHAIR ANNOUNCED.

The Men of League Foundation’s Chairman, Professor the Hon Stephen Martin, has announced his retirement
from the Board of the Men of League Foundation. Stephen was appointed to the Board in April 2015 and
elected to the role of Chairman in April 2017 to succeed the Foundation’s co-founder and Honorary President,
Ron Coote. Stephen has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Foundation to put in place a sound governance
framework and brought rigour to many aspects of the Foundation’s structure and operations. He has steered
rugby league’s leading charity through a COVID19-challenged 2020 and has led the Board in its dedication to
ensuring that the organisation still stands in a solid financial and operational position to continue its mission to
support those men, women and children in the rugby league community in need. The Foundation will have the
benefit of Stephen’s contribution through his ongoing volunteering as a valued member of the Foundation’s
Melbourne Committee.

Helen Wood Grant, Deputy Chair since 2017, was elected unopposed and unanimously as the new Chair. She
is Chair of the Board’s Covid-19 Response Committee which has provided advice to the Board, amongst other
things, on strategies to address the many revenue creation challenges the Foundation faced in 2020 and is
Chair of the Nominations Committee. She has devoted her professional skills in corporate communications,
strategy, reputation management and creative services to the Men of League Foundation’s success since her
appointment as a National Board Director in 2015. She is a life-long rugby league fan and a powerful advocate
for women in the game at all levels.

Previously a Board Member of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and Chair of numerous grass roots
community-based organisations, Helen understands what it means to volunteer and places the highest
possible value on the Foundation’s tireless army of committee members and the immense power of the game,
and the Foundation, to transform lives.

Alan Sullivan QC, was elected as Deputy Chair. He has been a Director of the National Board since 2015 and
Chair of its Finance Audit and Risk Committee which has been key to ensuring the continuing viability of the
Foundation. Alan is one of Australia’s leading barristers and has been a Queens Counsel since 1990. He has
combined his passion for law with his passion for sport and is regarded as one of the leading sports lawyers
internationally. Amongst his many honours is the ANZLA Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports Law. Alan
is former Chair of the Rugby League Judiciary and currently Senior Commissioner of the Cricket Australia Code
of Conduct Commission.
