Lovable larrikin Wally Dean

Ron Pomering and Warren Thompson (Sydney Metro Committee) visited Wally Dean in St Vincent’s Hospital where Wally attends three times a week for treatment as an outpatient.

Wally, despite his illness, was his usual entertaining self. A great raconteur, Wally is one of the real characters of rugby league. His love of football has been a lifetime commitment to the game. By his own admission, he was never going to be another Churchill or McCarthy as a player. However, after his days of being club Secretary with the Alexandria Rovers, he was President of the famous Souths Juniors Club in Kingsford for ten years.

Those of us fortunate to know him well hold a special place for the “lovable larrikin”. Wally has always been a supporter of the “battlers” of this world. The stories kept coming and time went so quickly. Ron suggested a drive out to La Perouse in the next few weeks for a feed of fish and chips with Wally. You can bet the stories will be continued and there will be plenty of laughs during the day. Never a dull moment when Wally Dean is present.
