John Acheson – A True Forbes “Magpies” Man

When Men of League Chairman Ron Coote AM and Northern Sydney Welfare Officer Ken Vessey paid a surprise visit to meet John Acheson (Men of League Member) at the North Shore Private Hospital. He was in good spirits whilst awaiting surgery in a few days’ time. Ron and Ken also had the pleasure to meet John’s wife Robyn and her brother David.

John told us that whilst he now lived in Dubbo, he was born in Forbes and was proud to tell us that he had only played rugby league for the Forbes Magpies RLF Club, progressing from junior teams to under 18’s, reserve grade as a five eight/centre to finishing his playing career as a second rower in first grade alongside a noted Combined Country Representative player, Peter Kennedy. He told us he still loved rugby league and his NRL team was the Sydney Roosters, which you can imagine sparked an interesting conversation with all of us especially Ron.

John has been retired for 4 years after many years employed with the NSW State Forests as a Financial Officer. He and Robyn spoke glowing of their family comprising of daughter Michelle, two sons Brett and Craig and their spouses, four granddaughters Ashleigh, Tyla, Caitlin, Ingrid and one grandson, Logan.

We presented John with a Men of League polo shirt and cap in appreciation of his services to rugby league and wished him a speedy recovery and return to Dubbo; John in return thanked us for the visit, which was a total surprise for him, and for the gifts.

Prior to leaving, John told us how much he was looking forward to the Forbes Magpies RLF Club Reunion to be held on Saturday 3 October 2015, adding that he would be fully fit by then and looking forward to remembering the good old days of playing with his mates.
