Graham King – Visit at Unanderra
Following a request from Souths Cares (South Sydney Rugby League) to visit Mr. Graham King, we contacted Illawarra Men of League President Peter Fitzgerald and informed him of the request for the visit.
Sydney Metro Welfare Officers, Warren Thompson, Alan Webb and John Peardheaded south to Unanderra to meet with Graham and his wife Chrissy.
Graham was born in England and migrated to Australia with his parents at the age of 11. The family settled in the South Sydney area and Graham began following of the Rabbitohs – which turned into a life-long passion for him. Graham is a former player/coach/official for Maroubra Lions and Matraville Tigers clubs in the South Sydney Juniors.
In 2012 he was diagnosed with cancer and with the support of his devoted wife Chrissy is fighting back in true South Sydney spirit with a ‘never give up’ determination.
When asked who his favourite Souths player was his reply, without hesitation, was John ‘Lurch’ O’Neill.
During the visit John Peardproduced a lot of humour with his yarns, as always.
Graham was presented with a Men of League polo shirt and courtesy of South Sydney, a Rabbitohscap, team posters/bumper bar stickers and a signed ‘Souths Cares’ football.
As the group were leaving they met another chap who resides within the same complex by the name of Peter Thompson who was also doing it tough. Peter, who was originally from Griffith played in the top grade in the second row with the strong Collegians Club in the Illlawarracompetition as younger man and was also a South’s fan. Men of League were happy to be able to give him a Rabbitohscap and team posters/bumper bar stickers also to bolster his spirit. Peter had previously been visited by Welfare Officers from Illawarra and was very appreciative of their support.
Both Graham and Peter expressed their appreciation for the visit and wished the Men of League Foundation continued success.
