Catching up with Brian Carlin

The Newcastle and Hunter Men of League Foundation Wellbeing Officers David Turrell, Vince Murphy and Garry Drummond recently visited Brian “Mick” Carlin.

Brian hasn’t been in the best of health lately and was very appreciative of our visit. Garry and ‘Mick’ had attended school many years ago, so a lot of reminiscing about the old days took place. Mick’s footy days and the State of Origin series was also at the forefront of discussion.

Mick played for North Newcastle in 1961, before moving to Macquarie United for a couple of years in 1962. In 1964, he decided he needed a change and moved to Western Suburbs (Newcastle) where he played out his career, except for 1967 where he turned out for Grafton.

Throughout his career, Mick represented Newcastle many times, once in the State Cup in 1964 and then in the Country Rugby League Championships in 1965, 1966 and 1970. In 1970, he was fortunate enough to represent Newcastle in a game against the touring Great Britain side, before retiring from rugby league in 1971.

The Foundation wishes Mick the best and looks forward to the next visit.
