A visit to Alan Wong

Colin Downing of Chelsea Old Mates and Warren Thompson of Sydney Metro Men of League Welfare paid a visit to Alan Wong at his home. Now, 81 years of age Alan has some memory loss, but looks and feels healthy with the excellent care of his devoted wife Fay.

Alan played for the mighty Rabbitohs during the 1950’s as a halfback. The strong South’s team had many top line players and Australian half back, Col Donohue made it difficult for Alan to crack a first grade spot.  He later became a highly respected selector when Jack Gibson coached the Souths in 1978 – 79. Continuing the red and green tradition Souths prop forward, the late John (Lurch ) O’Neill, built the Wong’s lovely home in Maroubra.

An excellent Chef, Alan and his brother Roy had a Chinese Restaurant in Kings Cross for many years. Alan’s family came to Sydney from Cobar, NSW when he was four years old and he has been a South’s man ever since.

Alan was presented with a Men of League polo shirt and Souths cap.
