Over 78,000 fans welcomed the two rivals onto the hallowed SCG turf, with many turning out to see the likes of Langlands, Gasnier and Raper lead St George to their tenth straight premiership.

However, a youthful Souths team including Coote, Sattler and McCarthy proved they were up for the occasion, muscling up to the champion Dragons side in the early stages of the contest. At half-time, the score favoured the Red V 5-4.

A fiercely contested 80 minutes was played out in front of the record crowd, with St George proving too strong for the brave Rabbitohs, prevailing 12-8, with Kevin Ryan named Man of the Match.
