Born in Newcastle, Bob passed away on the Gold Coast, aged 77. He began his football career with Lakes United juniors and went on to play three seasons of first grade with the club in the Newcastle competition. He then moved to Goulburn for one season before returning to Newcastle and playing three seasons of first grade with Central Newcastle.
He had a memorable season in 1964, representing Newcastle in their 16-14 win against the touring Frenchmen and then NSW Colts in the 39-15 win over France. Earlier that season, he was a member of the Newcastle Country Championship winning team and soon after, played a major role in Newcastle winning the State Cup. They beat St. George 5-3 in the semi-final and then Parramatta 14-7 in the final before 22,176 excited fans at Newcastle Showground.
This 1964 Newcastle team was an excellent young side which included such players as Allan Thomson, Jim Morgan, Allan Buman, Terry Pannowiitz and Dave Brown. As a young man in Newcastle, Bob was a committed member of the Swansea-Belmont Surf Life Saving Club.
In 1965, he joined South Sydney and played his initial first-grade match as a centre at Belmore Oval on 3 April in the 16-6 loss to the Bulldogs. He played 25 games in his first season, including the 12-8 Grand Final loss to St. George at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In 1967 and 1968 he was a member of winning South Sydney Grand Final teams.
In 1967 he was a centre in Souths 12-10 victory over Canterbury and the next year, he played in the second row when the Rabbitohs defeated Manly 13-9.
Bob also played in the second row when Balmain upset Souths 11-2 in the 1969 Grand Final. At the end of the 1970 season, he left Souths after 95 first-grade games and moved across the harbour to Manly.
In three seasons with the Sea Eagles, he played 14 first-grade matches. Soon after retiring at the end of 1973, he became a publican in the Penrith area and coached the 1976 Panthers reserve grade team.
Bob was the father and father-in-law of James and Lisa, Matthew and Gaye and Simone and Brad, while he had seven grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Friday 29 December at the Gold Coast.
