1989: Raiders v Tigers – Extra-Time Raid

They met in 1987 after Canberra had spent just five years in the competition, but it was the 1989 win by the Canberra Raiders in extra-time that put the capital on the rugby league map.

Trailing 12-2 at half-time, the Raiders fought it back to 12-8, before the Tigers had numerous attempts to finish off the game inside the final 20 minutes. With one final roll of the dice Canberran’s paid off as Laurie Daley collected a Chris O’Sullivan bomb and palmed it off to John ‘Chicka’ Ferguson, who produced the finish of his life to send the game into extra time.

With confidence mounting, the Raiders kicked a field-goal immediately in the extra stanza to take the lead, before Steve Jackson beat two defenders and carried three more on his way to the try line, putting the game beyond doubt.
